In addition to providing expert maternity services, our ​team will help you understand what to expect during childbirth and help you prepare for life with​ your new baby. Our certified childbirth educators at Atrium Health Floyd Women's Care Childbirth Education and our board-certified lactation consultants at Atrium Health Floyd Women's Care Lactation Services share their years of experience to guide you with a range of classes and support. ​

Beyond childbirth classes, we offer a Facebook group for moms after the baby is born called Moms Circle.

We offer an eight-week Maternal Mental Health Virtual Support Group to help promote mental wellness to moms after they have had a baby.

Our Atrium Health Floyd Women's Care Lactation Services location features our Mommy Boutique where you can purchase breast pumps, breastfeeding supplies and swaddle blankets.

​Early Pregnancy Essentials: 2-Hour Class

This  2-hour class is designed for expectant parents during weeks 4 - 22 of pregnancy. Led by one of ​​our Lamaze-certified childbirth educators and using evidenced-based research, this class will explore the changes you will experience in the coming months, including:

  • nutrition
  • fitness
  • pregnancy discomforts
  • tests during pregnancy
  • pregnancy​​​​ well-being

Early Pregnancy Essentials is held on select Tuesday evenings. 

​The cost is $15. Medicaid covers this class, and some insurance companies offer reimbursement. We encourage you to check your plan benefits for more details.

Pregnancy Support Group

This in-person Pregnancy Support Group gives pregnant women the opportunity to meet and share with other expectant moms and to learn more about the changes experienced during pregnancy.

The group is led by Atrium Health Floyd childbirth educators and meets on the last Tuesday of each month from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

​Details

Attendance is limited to 15 expectant moms. (No additional family or friends may attend.)

Snacks and beverages will be provided. Prize drawings will be held every other month.

The group is free to attend, but registration is required.

Prepared for Breastfeeding: 2-hour Class

This two​-hour class is offered before your baby is born. Our certified lactation consultants will teach you about breastfeeding basics, what to expect, techniques for latching and more. You will learn about common breastfeeding challenges and how to establish breastfeeding goals.

Prepared for Breastfeeding class is held on select Wednesdays from 6 - 8 p.m. The cost is $15. ​

Preparando para la Lactancia Materna Clase en español​

La clase, Preparando para la Lactancia Materna, ayudará a las futuras mamás a aprender cómo amamantar y cómo sentirse más cómodas con la lactancia materna. La clase será enseñada por dos consultoras de lactancia qué hablan español.

Los temas de la clase incluirán:

  • Conceptos básicos de lactancia materna
  • Posiciones de encanje
  • Problemas comunes y soluciones
  • Extracción de leche
  • ¡Y mucho más!

No hay costo para asistir la clase, pero todas las mamás deberán registrarse en línea.

Baby Health and Safety Class: 2-Hour Class

This two-hour class covers health and safety for mom and baby. You’ll learn about caring for your new baby, CPR, SIDS and car seats. A pediatrician will be on-hand to answer questions about your baby’s growth and development.

Baby Health and Safety is held on select Wednesdays from 6 - 8 p.m.

The cost is $15. Medicaid covers this class, and some insurance companies offer reimbursement.

​​Postpartum and Newborn Care: 2-Hour Class

This ​two-hour class helps moms and their partners understand what to expect after baby is born. Topics include learning the physical and emotional changes that mom experiences after birth and learning how to care for the new baby.

This class is held on select Wednesdays from 6 - 8 p.m.​

The cost is $15. Medicaid covers this class, and some insurance companies offer reimbursement.

​Prepared ​for Birth: 8-week​ Course  ​

Led by a Lamaze-certified instructor, these eight-week classes are held both in-person or virtually. You and​ your partner will learn about natural labor positions and techniques, and will practice new skills weekly.  

Our experts will also help you design your ideal birth experience, learn about healthy choices and create the life you want after baby is born. A breastfeeding class, and a baby health and safety class are included in this eight-week course. ​

Classes are held Mondays or Thursdays from 6 - 8 p.m. Virtual classes are held using Zoom video conferencing. The cost is $80. Medicaid covers this class, and some insurance companies offer reimbursement. 

The course is scheduled with due dates in mind. It is best if mom is at least 23 weeks when the class begins. ​

Birth Essentials: Saturday Class

This one-day class is taught by a certified childbirth educator. Classes are held either in-person or using Zoom video conferencing.

You and your partner will get a high-level overview of important childbirth topics, including preparing for labor and delivery, and pain management options.

The cost is $65. Medicaid covers this class, and some insurance companies offer reimbursement.

The course is scheduled with due dates in mind. It is best if mom is at least 28 weeks when the class begins.

Solo Mom’s​ Childbirth ​Class

The Solo Mom's Childbirth Class is for single moms or women whose partner is not available for birth. This class is not for couples. Moms may bring whoever will be the support person at the birth of the baby. 

Held on Monday evenings for three weeks, this class includes a virtual tour of the Family Birth Center.

This course will help solo moms enter motherhood with confidence. Moms will get a high-level overview of important childbirth topics, including preparing for labor and delivery, and pain management options. 

The cost is $65. The course material is scheduled with due dates in mind. It’s best if mom is at least 28 weeks when the class begins.  ​

​Support for Moms After Delivery​

Maternal Mental Health Virtual Support Group

The Maternal Mental Health Virtual Support Group is an eight-week support group to promote mental wellness to moms after they have had a baby. This group welcomes all postpartum mothers who need support in coping with the recent changes in their lives.

We use an established program to provide educational information, skills and support in a non-judgmental, caring space for moms ​who are dealing with depression, anxiety, or isolation, or who are feeling overwhelmed and trying to find balance as a mother.

Discussion topics include:

  • Group safety
  • Parenthood: myths, expectations, adjustments
  • Sharing your story
  • Self-expectations
  • Defining motherhood
  • Finding the way forward
  • Staying connected

The group meets virtually through Zoom every Thursday for eight weeks from 1 – 2 p.m.

There is no charge to attend, but attendees must register.
