Breastfeeding in the NICU

At Atrium Health Floyd, we encourage and support breastfeeding. Breast milk offers benefits to all babies; especially those who need medical care after birth.

A mother's body automatically produces milk that is specially designed to nourish her premature or critically ill baby, with extra calories, vitamins and protein. The natural nutrients support the baby's continued growth and development.

Our lactation consultants are available to assist new mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies. When a baby is too small or sick to nurse, we can help with the process of pumping and storing milk.

If a mother is unable to or chooses not to breastfeed, she can select to provide breast milk through Atrium Health Floyd's donor breast milk program.
