First Session Starts Aug. 22
ROME, Ga., Aug. 18, 2023 – Cancer patients and survivors are invited to participate in a free, creative journaling program sponsored by Atrium Health Floyd Arts in Medicine and Cancer Navigators.
“This will be an opportunity for them to express their feelings and thoughts about their life since their cancer diagnosis in a supportive group setting," said Denise Powers, a counselor with Cancer Navigators. She will be co-facilitating the sessions with Judy Schmidt, a registered art therapist and expressive arts coordinator for Atrium Health Floyd.
“I participated in a creative journaling workshop and enjoyed the therapeutic process so much that I wanted to share with others in hopes that it can help others to express themselves creatively while enjoying social engagement," Schmidt said.
“Creative journaling does so many things," Schmidt added. “It enables one to silence the inner critic and declutter ideas in a safe space with no judgment. It gives us permission to listen to our voice, our hopes and our needs by creating a journal using diverse types of art materials."
There are 12 openings for each class. While they classes are free, registration is required. Scheduled dates are Aug. 22, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. Each session will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the third-floor conference room of the Tony E. Warren Cancer Center, 255. W. Fifth St., in Rome.
