COVID-19 Tests Offered at Atrium Health Floyd

Atrium Health Floyd offers the three most common testing procedures: PCR, rapid results and antibody. Our health care experts can provide guidance to ensure you receive the test you need.

Below is a list of those tests, who should be tested, and what the tests can and cannot determine.

PCR or Molecular Testing

This is the most accurate test to determine if you have an active COVID-19 infection.

It is recommended for people showing symptoms and is most often done with a nasal swab. A swab is placed in one of your nostrils to get a culture.

Test results may take anywhere from two to three days, but its accuracy means it seldom needs to be repeated. This test cannot determine if you previously caught the virus and have recovered.

Rapid or Antigen Testing

This test can determine if you are currently infected with COVID-19 and is recommended for people showing symptoms.

It is usually done with a nasal swab.

The results of this test can be available in minutes, but those results are not always accurate. Rapid testing cannot determine if you previously caught the virus and have recovered.

Antibody Testing

This test can determine if you previously had COVID-19 and if you have developed antibodies that may fight the virus.

This is a blood test and requires that your finger be pricked or blood be drawn.

It cannot determine if you currently have the virus. It may take days to get the results and sometimes another test might be needed.
