Making the Best Food Choices When Eating Out

02.12.2021

You've made it through surgery and the first two or three stages of your post-surgery eating plan. Now you are ready to try takeout from your favorite restaurant or perhaps even eating at a restaurant while observing social distancing practices.

But you're nervous. What foods are best for you to eat? How can you enjoy a meal and still meet your nutritional needs?

The most important thing is to let protein be the biggest part of your meal. Be mindful of how long it has been since you had surgery and what types of proteins are recommend for you to eat.

Here are some easy protein choices:

  • Grilled Salmon, tuna or other soft fish
  • Beans, such as pinto beans or black beans
  • Grilled or roasted chicken, turkey breast, pork chops or pork loin
  • Scrambled eggs or egg whites
  • Cottage cheese
  • Hamburger, with fresh veggies and without the bun
  • Lean steak

Other tips for picking up takeout or restaurant dining:

  • Avoid fried food and creamy sauces.
  • Drink water and other liquids as you would normally do throughout the day.
  • Continue to eat meals and snacks as usual. Don't save your calories or stomach space.
  • Substitute a vegetable or salad for a starch such as a potato or rice.
  • Ask whoever you are eating with to support you. Maybe can pass on eating bread if you suggest it.
  • Restaurant portions are always too big. If you are dining in, ask for a to-go box when your meal is delivered. Keep the appropriate portion size for your food on your plate, and put the rest in the to-go box. You might not be as tempted to over-indulge if you can't see the food.
  • Choose an appetizer for a meal, such as shrimp cocktail, a small salad or a broth-based soup.
