Becoming a Parent

This program designed for new parents meets one night a week for six weeks, 6 - 8 p.m., either Monday or Thursday. The fee is $80 per couple for the entire course. The fee is covered by Medicaid and is reimbursed by some insurances. Participants must register to attend. To register, call 706.509.6548 or visit our Center for Women's Health located inside Mount Berry Square Mall.

Class Description

Class 1 & 2- Conception to Contractions
During these two classes, we will talk about late-pregnancy concerns, fetal development, and the physical and emotional process of labor and delivery. We will discuss the stages of labor and what to expect during each stage. We will begin discussing and practicing comfort techniques that will be helpful during labor. Also, you will learn pain management through different techniques, such as epidurial anesthesia and breathing techniques for relaxation and control.

Class 3 - Breastfeeding and Bottlefeeding
One of the most important decisions an expectant mother will make is whether to breastfeed or formula feed. We will help you understand the benefits for you and your baby of breastfeeding. A lactation consultant from our Breastfeeding Clinic will be available for all questions.

Class 4 -Recovery, Baby Care and Safety
During this class, you will learn about the care that you need to provide yourself and your newborn. You will learn about episiotomy care and physical and hormonal changes that occur for news moms. We will discuss topics such as Floyd's Newborn Nursery, circumcision care, diapering and safety care.

Class 5 - Infant and Child CPR
You will learn and practice infant basic life support which includes infant CPR and response to a chocking infant.

Class 6 - Tour of the Family Birth Center
We will take a complete tour of our Family Birth Center, showing you the nursery, delivery rooms and postpartum rooms. Your instructor will tell you where you will be meeting for this class. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Guest speakers are invited to speak to the class if the schedule permits.
