Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Floyd Medical Center provides pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with respiratory illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), control symptoms and improve day-to-day activities.

Floyd’s outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program uses exercise, behavior changes and education to help build a patient’s physical fitness. The goal is to return the patient to the highest possible level of activity.

Our program can help you breathe better by focusing on:

  • Strength training
  • Breathing exercises
  • Education about the disease and treatments
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Quitting smoking​​​


Floyd’s outpatient program for pulmonary rehabilitation treats illnesses such as:

  • Allergies
  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP)
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD)
  • Lung transplantation
  • Lymphagiomy omatois
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Sarcoidosis


A pulmonary rehabilitation program is built for the specific needs of each patient. Typically categorized into three phases, treatment may include:

  • A complete medical exam
  • Exercises that will help patients increase physical abilities, regain control of breathing and perform activities of daily living
  • Education about pulmonary disease, its management and how to protect your lungs
  • Nutrition counseling about how eating can affect shortness of breath
  • Counseling to help address the fear, anxiety and frustration that sometimes accompany lung disease
