Heart Attack Symptoms

Symptoms of a heart attack may occur suddenly or can present themselves mildly over time as more of a nuisance. Understanding the early warning signs and acting immediately can prevent permanent damage to the heart.

Typical signs and symptoms of a heart attack include:

  • Chest pain, tightness, pressure or discomfort
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck or jaw
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Nausea
  • Lightheadedness

Heart Attack Symptoms in Women

As with men, a woman's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. However, women are more likely than mean to experience other common symptoms, especially:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Back, stomach or jaw pain
