Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) Answers

1. What is PACS?

PACS is an electronic system that allows physicians to view radiology images, except mammography.

Images may be viewed from any Internet connection via the Physician Portal. You may access PACS from designated workstations at each nurses station and physician lounge throughout the hospital. Diagnostic monitors at designated nurses' stations and in high film-usage areas such as Critical Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Care Center will offer easy access to images while at the hospital.

You may also access PACS from your office, home or virtually anywhere with Internet access via the physician portal.

PACS is the communitywide system for Floyd Medical Center, Harbin Clinic and Redmond Regional. All three health care providers use the same system to make it easier for physicians to access all radiology images.

3. What benefit is PACS to physicians and staff?

  • Users can access original images immediately and produce exact duplicates without loss of image definition that results with film.
  • Images are accessible at all times from one place. No more tracking files and multiple storage areas.
  • Users can adjust image contrast and other parameters eliminating problems with images being too light or dark. Images can also be magnified, rotated, flipped and measured.
  • The system automatically enters patient demographics and exam specific date on every image.

8. Do I have access to all patients or just ones with whom I have a professional relationship?

Because PACS is accessible through the Physian Portal physicians have access to all patients in the system. If a physician views a patient that is not on the physician's record, a warning will appear. The physician may choose to abort or view the patient's information.

9. Will radiology images still be on film?

Images taken before PACS officially begins will still be on film. Images taken after November 22, 2005 will only be available through PACS.

10. Will PACS save me time?

Images can be found with a click of a button from anywhere with an Internet connection, even from your own home. You will begin to depend less on the radiology staff to track down files and travel to multiple storage areas to retrieve films.

You will be able to adjust image contrast and other parameters with a computer instead of dealing with films that are too light or dark.
