Curriculum

The Floyd Family Medicine Residency program follows a three-year curriculum designed to give residents a comprehensive clinical experience that will prepare them for future practice.

First Year

Residents rotate through a variety of in-hospital clinical services, learning the fundamentals of inpatient management and gaining abundant procedural experience. Outpatient experience during the first year includes care of patients in the Family Medicine Residency Clinic one half-day each week. Students see an average of three to six patients per half day.

Rotation Assignments:

  • Emergency Medicine: 1 month
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service: 2 months
  • Internal Medicine: 3 months
  • General Surgery: 1 month
  • Obstetrics: 2 months
  • Orthopedics: 1 month
  • Pediatrics (Inpatient): 2 months
  • Community Service: Twice per year

Second Year

Residents spend more time in ambulatory medicine, while supervising interns in their daily in-house activities. Residents spend two half-days per week in the Family Medicine Residency Clinic, seeing an average of six to nine patients per half day.

Rotation Assignments:

  • Critical Care: 1 month
  • Emergency Medicine: 1 month
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service with Night Float: 3 months
  • Family Medicine Clinic (outpatient): 1 month
  • General Surgery: 1 month
  • Elective: 1 month
  • Obstetrics: 1 month
  • Sports Medicine: 1 month
  • Pediatrics (inpatient): 2 months
  • Community Service: Twice per year

On-call Duty

First- and second-year residents share on-call duty in the hospital setting.

Third Year

Residents refine their experiences from the preceding two years. Residents spend more time in ambulatory medicine, working a minimum of three half-days per week in the Family Medicine Residency clinic, seeing an average of nine to 12 patients per half day.

  • Advanced Behavioral Health: 1/2 month
  • Cardiology: 1 month
  • Community Medicine: 1 month
  • Ear/Nose/Throat: 1/2 month
  • Electives: 3.5 months
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service: 1.5 months
  • Family Medicine Clinic: 1 month
  • Gynecology: 1 month
  • Ophthalmology: 1/2 month
  • Pediatrics (Outpatient): 1 month
  • Urology: 1/2 month
  • Community Service: Twice per year
