As we move closer to a fully integrated EMR at Floyd, questions are bound to arise. Following are a couple of the physician-generated questions we've received and the answers.
- Will I be able to access patient records at the office and home?
- Will radiology images be available to physicians at offices and homes?
- If Physician Portal/HPF is going away, how will medical records be accessed for admissions and testing that occurred prior to EMR?
- Is Floyd's EMR going to be compatible with Harbin Clinic's EMR?
- What are the technical requirements to access Floyd’s EMR from my office or home computer?
Q: Will I be able to access patient records at the office and home?
A: Yes. Floyd’s IT department will be providing a quick user guide on how to install and access the Cerner EMR application. A user name and password will be required to access the Cerner EMR. Physicians and their staff must be trained to receive a user name and password. Assistance will also be available from the IT department if needed to set the Cerner EMR up on your office or home computers. More details will be provided at a later date.
Q: Will radiology images be available to physicians at offices and homes?
A: Yes. Over the next few months, Floyd’s Information Technology (IT) department will be providing a quick user guide on how to install and access the Fuji Synapse PACS application. A user name and password will be required to access the Fuji Synapse application. Assistance will also be available from the IT department if needed to set Fuji Synapse up on your office or home computers. More details will be provided at a later date.
Q: If Physician Portal/HPF is going away, how will medical records be accessed for admissions and testing that occurred prior to EMR?
A: Physician Portal and HPF will be available until early December 2010 for physicians to review medical records, complete deficiencies, and electronically sign charts for patients discharged prior to the go-live date in October 2010.
All medical records contained in HPF (from March 2007 forward) are being converted and will be viewable in the new Cerner EMR system.
Discharges in October prior to the go-live date in October 2010 may not be available in the EMR system at go-live, but they will still be accessible via Physician Portal and HPF and will be converted to the new system by early December 2010.
For patients discharged after the go-live date in October 2010, the Cerner EMR will be used exclusively to review medical records, complete deficiencies, and electronically sign charts.
Q: Is Floyd's EMR going to be compatible with Harbin Clinic's EMR?
A: Harbin Clinic, Floyd Primary Care and the Family Medicine Residency program all use an EMR called Allscripts. The capabilities and functionality of an inpatient EMR (Cerner) and an ambulatory EMR (Allscripts) are designed to meet the specific needs of that venue. These are two different tools for two different purposes.
Once Floyd is live on the inpatient EMR, we will explore how these systems can be integrated to allow for improved physician workflow.
For example, laboratory and imaging results, discharge summaries
and operative notes currently are faxed to Harbin Clinic and scanned into the Allscripts system. By the first quarter of 2011, our goal is to be able to electronically pass those results and documents to the Allscripts system and to inform the physician of their availability.
Q: What are the technical requirements to access Floyd’s EMR from my office or home computer?
A:
Hardware - Floyd recommends a 1 gigahertz processor, 512 megabytes of memory, and 1 gigabyte of free disk space.
Software - Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 operating system with Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8.
Internet - A broadband Internet connection via DSL, cable, etc.
Floyd’s Information Technology department is compiling a detailed User Guide to help answer questions and to provide specific EMR installation instructions.
